Jacksonville Misdemeanor Defense Lawyer
Legal Representation for Misdemeanor Charges in Northeast Florida
Like other states, Florida crimes are categorized into misdemeanors and felonies based on how much time you will face in jail or prison. Misdemeanors are the lesser offenses of the two categories, with potential jail time of up to a year.
Just because they are not as serious as felonies does not mean that misdemeanor convictions cannot majorly impact your life. You will likely face fines, probation, and possibly other penalties along with jail time. These can include a driver’s license suspension, community service hours, mandatory counseling, and other court orders, depending on the nature of the offense.
In addition, a criminal record can make finding a job, getting a loan, or securing rental housing challenging. It can result in losing a professional license or being disqualified to obtain one. All of these consequences can cause strain on you and your family.
Thus, taking a misdemeanor charge seriously and seeking legal representation from an experienced criminal defense attorney is essential.

Repeat Offenses
Florida has taken a serious approach to repeat offenders of some more common misdemeanors.
For example, one prior conviction of petit theft can enhance a subsequent charge from a second-degree misdemeanor (punishable by up to 60 days in jail) to a first-degree misdemeanor (punishable by up to one year in jail). Two prior petit theft convictions can be used to enhance a third misdemeanor petit theft to a third-degree felony.
The crime of DUI is treated very similarly. A prior DUI conviction may be used to enhance the penalty of a subsequent conviction. Two previous convictions may be used to enhance a third DUI to a third-degree felony.
